Brian grew up in a small town in the San Bernardino Mountains, and in 1978 he moved to Mammoth Lakes, California.
This small town in the Eastern Sierras is not only a world-class ski
resort, but also is surrounded by the natural beauty of national
forests. Brian was initially impressed by the rich history of the area
and enjoyed exploring old mines and local historic sites.
Like
many long-term residents he was drawn to the excitement of outdoor
adventure sports, specifically ski racing and extreme skiing. He
captured some of the wildness of the outdoors for himself and pushed
the limits to become a talented extreme skier. He was one of the
pioneers of the extreme skiing craze, participating in the first
extreme competition in Valdez, Alaska. He earned the moniker "Flyin'
Brian" and traveled to mountain ranges all over the country, but his
heart was here in the Eastern Sierras.
When his days of extreme skiing
competition ended, Brian's next wilderness adventure involved working
at a pack station packing mules and taking visitors into the High
Sierra backcountry.
Today
Brian's love of the wilderness, and his enjoyment of extreme skiing
have found a new outlet for expression in his unconventional art.
The timber, artifacts and metal used to create his pieces are
reminiscent of the old mines, yet the subject matter is an imaginative
expression of his memories of the wilderness and the mountain
adventures. Brian has been working for the past decade to perfect his technique.
